Sligo Tennis Club Notes
Mixed Doubles
The annual pre-Christmas mixed Doubles
was held on Sunday 13th, generously sponsored by
Aware Menswear of Sligo.
Despite the frosty conditions, it was
a perfect day for tennis, and proved to be a most enjoyable
event.
In the C Section, Maureen Gorby and
Brian King were the early favourites, and did enough to win the
section from Therese Gillen and Frank Armstrong.
The B section held a Round Robin, with
Kay Curley taking first spot, while Michael O’Halloran came in
just a point behind.
The A section saw Jo Mullan and
Christy Hennessy win in a canter, with Ger Lowry and Vincent
Holland a few points behind.
Breda Roberts outdid herself in the
making of mince pies and mulled wine, which went down very well
when the hard work was done on court.
Our thanks to Aware Menswear for the
support.
Winter League.
The list for the Ulster Bank Winter
League has been posted on the Notice Board, with first games to
commence on January 16th. There are still a number of
places available.
St Stephen’s Day Mixed Doubles.
Weather permitting, a Mixed Doubles
event will be held on St Stephen’s Day, with the proceeds going
to charity.
This will be a great way to undo some
of the excesses of the Christmas Season, and also make a
contribution to a local good cause. The list is on the Notice
Board, and the entry fee is €10.
Season’s Greetings.
The Tennis Committee wish all our
players a Happy Christmas, and look forward to seeing everyone
back on court early in 2010. We also wish our sponsors and
suppliers a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
Autumn
League Results
Despite
dreadful weather on a number of mornings, the 2009 Autumn League
was an overall resounding success, with a full complement of
players present on court every Sunday, and some really exciting
matches played over the course of the competition.
As
with all sporting events, there have to be winners and losers, and
the winners for this year are:-.
Ann
Egan took first place in the Ladies A section, with a score of 75
points, just one ahead of the pre-tournament favourite, Ann Mc
Kiernan. Jo Mullan did
very well to get into third with 72 points.
Sheila
Mc Cormack needed 70 points to take the Ladies B section, with
Patricia Mc Mahon capturing second on a score of 68.
Third place was decided on countback, with Marie Mc Tiernan
taking the honours.
Ann-Marie
Mc Govern continued her progress up the table, adding first place
in the Ladies C section to her achievements in 2009.
Rose Kinsella was just two points adrift on 75, while
Ann-Marie Mc Cafferty finished a deserving third on 70 points.
Mel
Mc Keown was the early leader in the Mens B Group, and held that
spot to the last day, taking first place by a single point from
Patsy Mc Elhinney who finished on 77 points.
Nickolai Kolev was third on 67 points.
There
was no doubt over who would win the Mens A section, with Steve
Cunningham being the man to beat from very early on in the
campaign. Steve
amassed a record score of 85 points, winning comfortably from Liam
Farrell who had 76 points, and who pipped Barry Egan into third
spot by a single point.
Our
thanks to Tony and Ita Wehrly for the continued sponsorship of
this key event in the Tennis Club calendar.
Presentation
of prizes will take at a function in the Club on Jan 10th
next, and all winners are asked to attend.
Winter
League.
The
list for the Ulster Bank Winter League has been posted on the
Notice Board, with first games to commence on January 16th.
Mixed
Doubles Event.
AWARE
have graciously sponsored a final mixed event before the Christmas
break, which will take place on Sunday next (December 13th)
at 11.00 am. Mulled
wine and other Christmas treats will be on offer after the tennis.
Tennis
Committee.
A
new Committee will be elected early in the New Year.
A greater level of involvement in needed from more active
players in the Club, both to spread the workload and to ensure all
members are fully represented when decisions are being taken.
A list for committee nominations will be posted on the
Board in the coming week and players are asked to seriously
consider giving up a modest amount of their time to making sure
the Tennis section is run for the maximum benefit of the members.
