The
finals of the Higgins Pharmacy Team Event took place on Thursday
night November 1st. This event has been running for the
past month with four teams based on a round robin format. At the
end of the round robin format the final standings were:
Team
A
- 46 points
Team B - 51 points
Team C - 36 points
Team D -
47 points
So after the final standings Team A and Team C were contesting 3rd
& 4th place while Team B & Team D were
contesting the finals.
In
the 3rd & 4th place play off in which
the format was 2 games to 21 both teams were level with 6 points
apiece after the first series of games. However despite some close
scoring in the remaining games Team C got the vital breakthrough
to eventually win 11 – 9 and condemn Team A to the wooden spoon.
The
final itself was expected to be a close affair as both teams
seemed to be very evenly matched and their match in the round
robin format only resulted in a narrow 2 point victory for Team B.
The format for the final was 3 games to 21. After the first series
of matches the expected close affair had materialised with Team D
holding a slender 1 point lead
at 8 -7. However in the second series of matches Team B turned the
one point deficit around and now lead by one point at 14-13 going
into the final mixed doubles match. Despite a very close game
which indeed could have gone either way Team B eventually won 2
– 1 and to win overall on a score line of 16-14.
In
her presentation speech Captain Siobhain McDermott thanked Higgins
Pharmacy for their sponsorship of the event, those who helped
organise the event, the captains of each team, and all the players
as well as the subs who took part.

Sligo
Junior Open
A
local boy Jonathan Dolan was the star of the show at last weeks
Sligo open junior badminton tournament held in Sligo Lawn Tennis
Club. Jonathan won the boys U/15 singles and doubles titles
beating the best players in the country on Saturday and he won the
boys U/17 doubles on Sunday. This was a fantastic performance
given that he is under 15 again next year. It not surprising given
that he played for Ireland’s under 15 team last year while he
was still under 13.
This
prestigious event is the first ranking tournament of the season
and it attracts the top players from all over Ireland. There are
competitions for boys and girls in U/11, U/13, U/15 and U/17 age
groups. Sligo was well represented in all these age groups. Over
100 of the best junior badminton players from all over Ireland
played in the tournament with players travelling to this two day
event from as far as Wexford and Belfast.
Girls
under 11
The
tournament started with the under 11 girls with the Sligo pair of
fionnula Scanlon and Emma Donaghy putting up a great show. Emma
was playing girls several years older than her but this didn’t
put her off and she performed well. Fionnula played really well
and just missed out
on
a semi final place by one point. Scanlon came out on top in the
plate competition winning the singles.
Rebecca Getty from Lisburn won the event beating Rachel Darragh
from Raphoe in the final. Getty went on to win a second gold when
she and her partner Kate Frost from Dublin won the doubles. They
beat Moya Ryan from Clare and Rachel Darragh in the final.
Boys
under 13
In
the boys U/13 Danny Keown put in a great performance in the
singles narrowly losing in the semi finals to the second seed
Matthew Lightbody. Danny topped his group in the round robin
stages beating the no. 2 seed Matthew Lightbody. He played another
local boy, Conor Scanlon in the Quarter final and his greater
experience showed. He won this match in two sets. Scanlon had
played well to get out of his group winning two games. In the semi
final Danny again played Matthew Lightbody who reversed the
earlier result. Danny played really well and should have won the
first set. He lost it 24/22 and then lost the second set 21/16. If
Danny increases his training he will be competing for titles
before the year is out. John Joe Boles and his older brother
Jeremy came up against some strong opposition in the group stages
and were unlucky not to progress to the Quarter finals. The final
was contested by the two Lightbody brothers from Lisburn. The
older brother, Ross came out on top winning in two sets.
Keown
partnered 10 year old Christopher Black in the doubles. They
played extremely well considering this was their first event as a
partnership. They reached the semi finals where they played the
no. 2 seeds Ryan Stewart and Frazer Wallace. Keown and Black won
the first set 21/16 but seeded pair came back strong and took the
next two sets. Jeremy Boles teamed up with Kevin Doyle from Dublin
and they narrowly missed out on a place in the semis.
In
the final the top seeds, Ross and Matthew Lightbody, were too
strong for Stewart and Wallace. This was a terrific final with the
first set going to 30/28 in favour of the Lightbody’s. They won
the second set 21/16.
Girls
under 13
There
were great performances from the Sligo girls U/13 events with
Ciara Donaghy reaching the semi finals. Emma Mc Tiernan and
Fionnula Scanlon just missed out on the semi finals.
Emma
Mc Tiernan was in a strong group which included the top seed
Rebecca Getty. Just like Scanlon earlier on, Mc Tiernan failed to
reach the semi by one point with a score of 49. Fionnula Scanlon
moved up from U/11’s for the experience and she shocked some of
her older opponents. She nearly created a major upset by reaching
the semi finals but just missed out. Saoirse Feeney did well
considering she only took up the game last year. With her mother,
Martina coaching her, she should make rapid improvement over the
coming season. Ciara Donaghy had a great tournament losing in the
semi final to Fionnula Mc Court from Meath. She was runner up in
her group and then beat Emily Mc Donagh in the quarter final. The
final was won by Getty who beat Mc Court in two sets.
The
doubles competition was very even with little between all the
pairs. Ciara Donaghy played with Saoirse Feeney. They played in a
strong group and didn’t make the semis despite winning two
games.
Emma
Mc Tiernan played with Fionnula Scanlon and although they also won
two games and beat the runners up in the group they also went out
of the competition. They bounced back from this disappointment by
winning the plate doubles.
Boys
U15
The
boy’s U/15 competition was the show case for the tournament. It
was expected to be a very open competition because there is so
little between the top 20 players in the country. It was indeed a
very tough competition with some of the top seeds losing out on
the day. Playing in his home club the current Irish U/13 champion,
Jonathan Dolan, didn’t disappoint his supporters. He justified
his no.1 seeding and came through to win the singles.
David
Walsh from Ballina who now trains in the Sligo club will consider
himself unlucky to have been drawn in Jonathan’s group. Walsh
was especially unlucky considering that Dublin’s Adam Jermyne
was also in his group and he played Dolan the following day in the
U/17 singles final. Dolan beat Liam O’ Leary from Drogheda in
the quarter finals 21/13, 21/17. O’ leary had already beaten the
3rd seed Ciaran Chambers from Lisburn in the group
stages. Dolan had a much tougher game in the semi final when he
came up against Adam Jermayne. Dolan won the match in two tough
sets 22/20, 21/19.
In
the other half of the draw the 4th seed Joshua Magee
from Raphoe beat Neil O’ Flaherty from Dublin in the quarter
finals. This was a gruelling three setter. Sligo’s Conor Caheny
was in the same group as the inform Magee and didn’t make the
quarter finals. Conor is multi talented and as well as playing in
the badminton competition he also played in a tennis competition
on the same day. Incidentally he reached the final of the tennis.
Magee went on to meet the no.2 seed Matthew Getty from Lisburn in
the semi final. Magee was in control from the start and won easily
in two sets 21/12, 21/16.
In
some ways the final was an all Sligo affair with Joshua Magee
playing Jonathan Dolan. Joshua trains with Jonathan in Sligo
because his older brother Danny is the present coach for the Sligo
Tennis Club Badminton players. Regular coaching from the current
National Senior Doubles champion is starting to show on the
performances of many Sligo Tennis Club players.
The two players play each other regularly in training so they know
each others game very well. They both played great badminton and
Dolan narrowly won the match in two sets, 21/18, 21/18.
This
year Dolan and Magee are playing doubles together and they started
the season in fine form beating Matthew Getty and Ciaran Chambers
in the final. They didn’t start the doubles competition well and
only qualified for the semi finals as runners up. This wasn’t
surprising because this is their first tournament playing
together. In the semi final they beat Liam O’ Leary and Neil
O’ Flaherty easily in two sets 21/18, 21/14. It was expected
that they would have a tougher game in the final against Chambers
and Getty who are playing together for the past five years. The
Sligo pair dominated from the start and won in two sets 21/16,
21/12.
Girls
under 15
All
the best Irish players were in this competition and the eventual
singles winner was Ruth Roddis from Belfast who is on the current
Irish U/17 team although she’s only 14. The runner up was
Caroline Black her club mate and doubles partner who is a current
Irish U/15 player.
Elaine
Finnegan and Laura Keown were the two Sligo players who played in
the singles. Both girls played well on the day in this highly
talented fields. Elaine played especially well and won two games
in the round robin. She missed out on a quarter final spot despite
playing well and she can take heart from her overall play. Laura
was in a tough group which included Sophie Brondum and Elana
Stephenson who will both be Irish Internationals. Laura won the
games she should have in the group and lost narrowly to the two
stronger girls.
Laura
was unable to play in the doubles due to a prior commitment to a
‘Sligo Musical’ and Elaine had to team up with a different
partner. Her new partner wasn’t as strong as Laura and they
struggled in the group stage against very good opposition.
It
was an all Lisburn final with Ruth Roddis and Caroline Black
proving too good for Rachel Orr and Kirsty Walker winning in two
sets 21/12, 21/10.
Boys
Under 17
This
competition was again dominated by the best under 15 players
because the top U/17 boys decided to play in the National U23
competition played on the same day in Wexford.
Jonathan
Dolan put in some great performances and he won the doubles
competition playing with David Marron. Indeed Dolan made it to all
three finals in the U/17 age group. Jonathan and his (new) partner
David Marron teamed up for the doubles. They won their group
easily and played the experienced Diarmuid Cox and Cian Mc Donagh
from Dublin in the semi final. This was a comfortable two set
victory 21/12, 21/15. Adam Jermayne and his usual partner Rory
Curry came through the other semi final. They were pushed all the
was in the semi by the Ballina brothers Darren and David Walsh who
both train in Sligo. This was a tough three setter with the
Walsh’s losing out 21/14, 19/21, 21/12. This was a great
performance by the brothers because David was playing above his
normal age group and Darren hasn’t played in many competitions
at this level. Jermayne and Curry were expected to beat the
scratch pairing of Dolan and Marron in the final. They however
didn’t read the script and put in one of the best performances
of the week end ensuring that Dolan won his third title in two
days. They were always in control and won in two sets 21/18,
21/15.
In
the boys singles Jonathan Dolan played Rory Curry from Dublin in
the quarter final and defeated him easily 21/9, 21/7. He beat
another Dublin player, Cian Mc Donagh, in the semi final. Sam
Boles was the other Sligo player in this competition. Sam found
the going tough in a strong group and didn’t make the quarter
finals. Adam jermayne came through the other half of the draw to
again meet Dolan in the Final. Dolan had just beaten Jermayne in
the boy’s doubles and also the previous day in the boy’s
singles but the two days continuous play showed on the younger
player. The twelve year old ran out of steam against the
physically stronger 14 year old Jermayne got some measure of
revenge winning in two sets.
This
was the final event in a hectic two day schedule. Our thanks to
the Sligo Lawn Tennis Club for hosting the event and many
favourable comments were received regarding the condition of the
floor and the facilities available with special emphasis on the
lounge and the food supplied in a friendly fashion by the genial
Michael. The parents who travel long distances with their children
really appreciate the facilities that we in Sligo take for
granted.
