Sligo Players Capture Top Badminton Ranking Points

The national juvenile badminton season got underway on the 10th and 11th of September 2011 as Sligo Tennis Club was host to the Connaught Open Juvenile Badminton competition.

There were Singles, Doubles and Mixed events for U-13, U-15 & U-17 age groups which attracted players from all 4 Provinces, as valuable national ranking points were up for grabs.

Sligo players, at their home venue, featured well in the competitions with local girl Fionnuala Scanlon, along with her partner Victoria Ringland, capturing the U-17 Girls Doubles title, defeating Rachel Boyle and Nora O’Gorman. Conor Scanlon and Danny Keown, both Sligo players, defeated Nicholas Murphy (Wexford) and Niall Reynolds (Dublin) in a closely contested 3 set match. Fionnuala also made the final of the U-15 Girls Singles event, in which she was beaten by Sarah Boyle.

Donegal player, Kyle Magee showed great talent throughout the U-13 competitions by winning the Singles, Doubles and Mixed events.

Tournament organiser, Paul Dolan, commented that the tournament was a great success with over 100 entries and thanked Sligo Tennis Club for their excellent facilities and hospitality over the weekend. This is also a major factor in attracting players and their supporters from around the country to this Sligo competition.
