Sligo Kick starts the Nation’s Badminton Season
The badminton season gets underway in Connaught with the Sligo Open Juvenile Badminton competition taking place in Sligo Tennis Club on Sat / Sun the 10th and 11th of September 2011. There will be Singles, Doubles and Mixed events for U-13, U-15 & U-17 age groups.
This event is the first ranking tournament of the season i.e. players can obtain points towards their national ranking in their relevant age groups. With these valuable points up for grabs, players from all over Ireland will converge on Sligo Tennis Club for this event and will set the tone for the season ahead.
Competition organiser and Badminton Ireland referee, Paul Dolan, expects an increase in numbers for the event this year. Paul and the County Executive are busy sourcing accommodation and helpers for the weekend.
The expected favourites are visiting Kate Frost and Rachel Daragh with local girl Fionnula Scanlon also expected to feature. Loughlinn’s Janie Fahy has been in fine form and is also expected to do well. In the Boys Section locals, and Irish Representatives, Conor Scanlon and Danny Keown are fancied to win the Doubles.
The event is free of charge and open to the public, all spectators welcome. It would be well worth a visit to see some of Ireland’s top juvenile badminton players in action.
